kale kale kale

It must be winter in the Northern Hemisphere. The stores are full of yummy green and purple, flat and curly kale. Now i have to confess that i had never eaten kale before last week, now im hooked and planning a kale crop in our garden for next winter. I love greens and this is the green to beat all greens for me; cooked greens that is. In the spirit of my new found love, i have ventured into the world of the fast food kale - the kale chip. After consumption and a moment of 'i have to have these', all i can say is, i have done the research and they look very reproducable.

Kale Chips -
chop kale into pieces, toss with apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, nutritional yeast ( the magic secret ingredient in my eyes thats not talked about online), salt, apparently pink Himalayan is best (!), ground cashew, miso. Mix all together and dehydrate in oven for about half an hour.

Viola. Kale chips. Vegan, no oil and ohh soo yummy!

Mmmm...kale is one of my favorite things to eat, and now I'll definitely have to try the kale chips. We usually sautee it in lots of garlic and olive oil for about 10 minutes, then sprinkle lime (or lemon) juice and sea salt on top. It's one of those things that makes you feel so good when you eat it. I had 2 varieties of kale in my seed order.

I had a lot of kale growing, one of our favourite greens, (along with silverbeet), and it looks pretty growing in the garden. This could be something to try next season. I'd use Murray River salt which is also pink, and local.

Rixa- i agree. a head of garlic per 2 bunches cooked wth olive oil...heaven. i could eat it as a meal itself. I think a splash of tamari also works well.

RNI - Why is that aussies are not into kale??? i have never seen it for sale here.definitely putting in lots this march for the winter season. i have murray salt, ( wont make a pun about it coz its just too depressing) but i wondered why himalayan salt was worth the extra couple of thousand miles when im sure th Us produces some pink salts...

You can usually get kale (when in season) at Wilson's Organics in Gouger St, and I'm fairly sure I've seen it in Central Market as well.

Hi Kel

I used to grow kale to feed to my cow (when I was on a property), now I grow it for us to eat. Try chopped kale with a little onion or shallot sauteed in vege or chicken stock - yummy! I'll have to try those chippies!! xx

Kale for Sale said...

A co-worker brought in kale chips she'd made and they were ridiculously good. I've not seen them for sale though. Growing up we never ate kale because it was chicken food but I love it now. I steam/saute it, toss it in olive oil and add a bit of sea salt - for breakfast. I wish I had some now.
