you know its spring when...

the ducks that live in the garden bring out their hatchlings for some exercise and a practice at sifting through the sand and foilage. we were delighted this morning to find that the 8 ducklings she brought down yesterday all survived the night , a good sign at this young age that she has a nice safe nesting for them overnight. they look about 4 days old and look just so sweet paddling furiously along the waters surface to keep up with mum. B1 and i spent the whole morning sitting in the sun watching them swim about and then settle down for a rest.

Gorgeous duckies. My ducks won't sit & I didn't incubate anything this year due to being away for elder daughter's wedding. However a couple of weeks back I opened the back window to the poultry shed & opened the new house & from nowhere a mummy henny & 8 chicks appeared. The chicks couldn't have flown from the shed floor to the window ~ the horrid goats had knocked their ramp down ~ & only Woodstock, the Partridge Cochin Cockerel, had spent the night in the new house... It's very late in the season for chicks as we're going into Winter. Actually, we didn't leave Winter this year, only the temperature rose a little & the days got longer for a while, but the rain stayed.

The farmers & I would have liked some dry weather over the Summer ~ it's going to be almost impossible to get hay this Winter. We shouldn't have 11 1/2 months of Winter in a year!
